over the next few days, sleep was almost non-existent. i heated up broth, awkwardly changed diapers, constantly checked on baby wesley, and helped jenna whenever sitting up was too painful.
all the while, mom and brooke stopped by almost daily, steadily taking over more of the chores around the house.
At first, I genuinely appreciated their help.
Mom organized the laundry and handled meals while Brooke cleaned baby bottles and encouraged me to rest because I looked completely worn out. They frequently reminded Jenna how fortunate she was to have family members living nearby who could help her.
However, one evening after Mom left the bedroom, Jenna gently squeezed my hand and admitted that she sometimes felt uncomfortable around my mother.
I kissed her knuckles and repeated the words I would later regret more than almost anything else.
“She means well.”
Those three simple words would eventually carry a meaning I never expected.
A few days after Jenna returned home, my workplace called before sunrise about missing inventory records connected to my department.
My manager sounded deeply concerned and insisted that I travel temporarily to another branch because the company was facing potential financial losses and possible legal complications.
